Formal Decision: Spring Fling to be Held in June

Story by: Allie Tracey and David Rivera

STANWICH EAST— The date for the Second Annual Spring “Fling,” an end of the year formal for Upper School students at The Stanwich School changed recently to June 6.

Mr. Dunn, as well as the Upper School Government Representatives, agreed to the new date and other details about this spring’s formal.  The Pow Wow, a local Greenwich event, was also scheduled for the original May 4th date, and many students expressed an interest in opting out of the formal.

As a result, the date for the formal has been moved to June 6, the day before Closing Ceremonies- and when students go their separate ways for the summer.

The decision means that this not only helps the students prepare, but it will also serve as a proper good bye and send-off to vacation.

“We simply listened to the students,” Student Government Advisor Mr. Dunn said, “And they got what they wanted.”

As the end of the year is imminent, goodbyes are part of the spring routine.  Having the formal on this later date will be important for a transition, and help all students realize how much we might miss being one big family throughout the summer.

Walk for Hope Brings Out Competitive,

Compassionate Spirits

Story by Esther Hoekstra

GREENWICH - As the Breast Cancer Alliance hosts a walk to raise awareness for that cause, Stanwich will compete with other schools to raise money.

The goal of this 7th annual event is to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.  All of the schools that support the Breast Cancer Alliance will compete and the school with the most participants will win a trophy.

Breast cancer affects nearly 200,000 women each year and more than 40,000 are untreated.  While it is predominately a women’s health issue, men can be affected too. Approximately 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

The Breast Cancer Alliance is sponsoring a one-mile walk on May 20th in honor - or in memory - of those who fight breast cancer, in hopes of a cancer-free future. This is another event in their portfolio: previous ones included a fashion show to also raise funds for research.

“It’s a great cause and everyone should come and participate,” said sophomore Caroline Drennen.  “It’s going to be really fun.”
